NURSING

Nursing caregivers are made up of Registered Nurses (RN’s), Registered Practical Nurses (RPN’s), Personal Support Workers (PSW’s)/Health Care Aides (HCA’s). Staffing is allocated according to the level of care needs on each home area. Twenty-four hour nursing care is provided for all residents.

  • Personal Support Workers/Health Care Aides assist with daily activities of living, moving through a routine familiar to the resident. Our "doing with" approach is designed to enhance the opportunity to make meaningful choices and ensure individualized care for each resident.
  • Medications are administered by the Registered Nursing staff at scheduled times as prescribed by the attending physician.
  • Attending physicians visit the Manor weekly. Each resident is visited by the physician a minimum of quarterly, and a physician is on-call 24 hours a day. Residents may choose to keep their physician from the community upon the physician’s agreement to sign a contract with Ottawa Grace Manor.
To ensure consistent medical care, nursing staff coordinate all medical appointments for residents as ordered by the attending physicians. Family members are encouraged to accompany residents on any appointments in the community whenever able.
  • Baths and showers are offered twice a week (more frequently if necessary) and are supervised by nursing staff. We employ both male and female nursing staff and preferences for male or female attendants for personal services can be accommodated.
  • Call bells are provided in each bedroom and washroom for resident use.

SOCIAL WORK

LIFE ENRICHMENT

The Life Enrichment Department provides a variety of recreational, cultural, physical and intellectual activities designed to meet the needs of individual residents.

Activity calendars for each floor are available at the front desk, posted outside the activity rooms on the home areas, and posted on the bulletin boards on each floor at the beginning of the month, to assist families in their planning for visits. The activity calendar is reviewed and changed monthly. A copy of the activity calendar, as well as the newsletter, is delivered at the beginning of the month, to each resident’s room. Sample copies of the first floor and third floor’s activity calendars are provided on pages 22 and 23 of this tour book.

With several outings a month, the residents at Ottawa Grace Manor enjoy a variety of community experiences. Minimal transportation costs apply for outings.

ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES (Maintenance, Housekeeping & Laundry)

Laundry services are provided for all residents, with the exception of dry cleaning and other specialized cleaning services. Housekeeping staff wash and label personal clothing at no extra cost. All residents clothing must be labelled upon admission and whenever new clothing is purchased by residents or family.

Each resident home area has a laundry room equipped with a commercial washer, dryer, laundry sink and an automated laundry soap dispensing system. Residents and families are welcome to make use of these facilities to enhance a “homelike” and familiar experience for the residents and to meet any special laundering requirements they may have.

Ironing boards and irons are available for use by families, as well as by residents under supervision.

All bed sheets and linens (towels, etc.) are sent out to be laundered; Ottawa Grace Manor has contracted services with an external linen provider.

The common areas of the Manor (i.e. dining rooms, hallways, and lounge areas) are air conditioned.

While our philosophy is to encourage residents to do as much for themselves as they are able, housekeeping of residents rooms is provided by housekeeping services, with some assistance by nursing staff. Assistance is provided to residents and families upon admission to ensure the room is set up in such a manner to enhance a home like environment for our residents.

FOOD SERVICES

Individual needs of the residents are met with our on-site meal preparation. The Director of Food Services and the Registered Dietician assess the needs, likes and dislikes of each resident and establish a Nutritional Plan of Care.

We value the input we receive from our residents. Resident Food Committee meetings are held monthly to review menus, resident concerns, and related nutritional topics. Residents have input to the menus initially as well as with “Resident’s Choice”, were residents choose the meal for that period. The menus must be approved by the Dining Committee as well as the Registered Dietician prior to their implementation.

Our 4 week rotating menus are changed twice a year to reflect the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons. During the summer months we hold resident and visitor BBQs. Families and friends are invited to join their loved ones at meals and special events. Tickets are available at reception and special seating arrangements can be made in advance.

In addition to 3 meals daily, residents enjoy between meal nourishments from a rotating nourishment menu. Special nourishments are also available based on resident likes and dislikes.

ADMINISTRATION

Administration at the Grace Manor is comprised of Accounting, Human Resources, Scheduling and Reception. At reception residents are able to purchase bus tickets and small gifts. It is not recommended that residents keep large amounts of cash in their rooms therefore resident trust accounts are available for withdrawing small amounts of cash and charging items and services. Residents can access their money at the accounting office Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

The Grace Manor offers two types of accommodation: Private and basic. If your income is not sufficient to pay for the basic accommodation rate, there is a subsidy available to reduce your accommodation rate. Subsidies are only available for basic accommodation. If you are moving into a long-term care home and your spouse requires financial assistance to remain in his or her home, there is a government benefit called "Exceptional Circumstances" for people with lower incomes or couples who have to live separately for reasons beyond their control.
